F Burman

Francois Burman is a mechanical engineer from Cape Town, South Africa. His background includes serving as a commissioned marine engineering officer in the South African Navy, working as a project & welding engineer and later serving as senior manager at the Atomic Energy Corporation of South Africa.

In 1994, he specialized in diving and hyperbaric engineering.

He serves as an international safety consultant in diving and hyperbaric medicine; conducts safety surveys of recompression and clinical hyperbaric facilities globally; produces articles, publications and technical book chapters; and lectures on several hyperbaric safety education programs.

He was made a Fellow of the South African Institute of Welding in 2004 and awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Southern African Undersea and Hyperbaric Association, due to his long and active service on both bodies.

His work has also been recognized through several international awards in diving and hyperbaric safety, the most recent being the UHMS Wilbur Workman and UHMS Associates Distinguished Service awards.

He is an active member of several industry agencies, including the UHMS safety committee, and multiple ASME-PVHO, NFPA 53 and South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) committees.

His appointments include: Director of Underwater & Hyperbaric Safety at the Divers Alert Network, based out of North Carolina (USA); technical consultant for the International Divers Alert Network; and managing director of a range of medical and commercial engineering companies.
